IHOP Asks ``What's in Your Pocket?''; ``Pocket-Size'' Valentine's Day Survey Compares What Men and Women Would Most Want to Find in Their Pockets This Holiday

February 11, 2005

GLENDALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 11, 2005--To celebrate its Fruit Pocket Pancakes limited time offer, IHOP (NYSE:IHP) asked men and women what they would most like to find in their pockets this Valentine's Day. Surprisingly, only 17 percent of the population would like to find a diamond hidden in their pocket on February 14. The glittering rock was bested by perhaps the oldest and simplest gift of all: A love note (23 percent).

The survey confirmed, however, that women are still twice as likely as men (23 percent vs. 11 percent) to want the thrill of a diamond in their pockets, while men tend to be more concerned with other romantic matters ... their breath. The IHOP Fruit Pocket Pancakes survey revealed that men are more than twice as likely as women (7 percent vs. 3 percent) to want to find breath mints in their pockets to help facilitate that perfect smooch on the lovers' holiday.

"We conducted the survey because we look at pancakes as a fun, tasty treat, especially when you shape them into something like a pocket and fill them with fruit," said Carolyn O'Keefe, chief marketing officer, IHOP Corp. "Who knows, maybe that love note people are looking for this holiday will include an invitation to try our Fruit Pocket Pancakes."

And that might just be the case, especially if the IHOP is located some place tropical. According to the survey, an airline ticket was the No. 1 pocket wish, with more than one-third of respondents (37 percent) choosing a tropical getaway as their top choice.

Men are probably more likely to get their wish, simply because their odds are better. According to a survey of 1,000 Americans, almost three quarters of men (72 percent) carry three or more items in their pocket at any given moment, compared to nearly half of women (45 percent) who said they don't carry that many pocket items. In fact, one-third of women said they never carry anything in their pockets. But that doesn't mean they're not interested in what other people are carrying in their pockets. In fact, everybody is a little curious.

When asked whose pockets they would most like to peek into, most (35 percent) wanted to know what billionaire Donald Trump was toting around, followed by President George W. Bush (27 percent) and, at a distant third, but more intriguing to men, was what heiress Paris Hilton (9 percent) might have tucked away. Interestingly, the majority of respondents (86 percent) could care less about what's in their spouse's pocket or even their boss's pocket.

IHOP is banking that consumers will also want to put fruit in their pockets this February. For the first time, guests can savor Fruit Pocket Pancakes -- IHOP's pancakes wrapped around the delectable flavors of sweet caramel-apple, succulent blueberry, peaches & cream or cool strawberry-banana. Fruit Pocket Pancakes are available now through February 20.

"People will love what's in our pockets," quipped O'Keefe. "Anyone who tries our limited time Fruit Pocket Pancakes will experience a whole new way to eat their favorite breakfast food."

Delightfully delicious, Caramel-Apple Fruit Pocket Pancakes are drizzled with sweet caramel sauce and crowned with a dash of powdered sugar. Swirls of syrupy glaze, whipped topping and sprinkles of powdered sugar top the Blueberry and Peaches & Cream pockets. Strawberry-Banana Fruit Pocket Pancakes explode with the fresh flavors of cool, juicy strawberries and bananas.

These fruit-filled treats are available a la carte or as part of IHOP's Sampler, Big or Regular Combos, which may include additional breakfast items such as eggs, crisp bacon strips, grilled strips of ham, pork sausage links and golden hash browns. With a starting price of just $4.99 these tasty treats burst with flavor without busting your back pocket.
