IHOP Asks Governors in 15 States to Move Presidential Primaries

December 5, 2007
Company Seeks to Protect the Tradition of National Pancake Day
GLENDALE, CA, Dec 05, 2007 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX News Network) -- IHOP (NYSE: IHP), one of America's favorite restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner, announced today that it has written the governors of the 15 states planning to have their presidential primaries on February 5, requesting that those governors change their state's primary date in honor of National Pancake Day. As it stands, Super Tuesday conflicts with the centuries-old tradition of National Pancake Day; when IHOP plans to offer free buttermilk pancakes at its more than 1,300 restaurants in a fundraising effort that the company hopes will raise more than $750,000 for local charities nationwide.

IHOP fears low voter turnout if the two events go head-to-head, as Americans may be tempted to forgo their patriotic privilege for the fluffy frenzy of free flapjacks. IHOP has sent letters to the governors of Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Utah requesting their assistance in moving the primary date and thereby preserving the tradition of National Pancake Day.

IHOP introduced its fundraising effort to support National Pancake Day in 2006. In 2007, the company and its guests joined forces with Children's Miracle Network to give away more than 1.1 million pancakes and raise more than $625,000 for local children's hospitals and other worthy causes. Since beginning its National Pancake Day celebration, IHOP has raised approximately one million dollars to support charities in the communities in which it operates.

IHOP's National Pancake Day stems from Pancake Day, a centuries-old celebration traditionally held the Tuesday preceding Lent to rid iceboxes of forbidden dairy products.

"National Pancake Day has become a time-honored tradition, but we realize and respect that the democratic process must be preserved," said Patrick Lenow, IHOP's director of National Pancake Day. "If the governors deny our request to move their primary dates, IHOP will be forced to activate Plan B to ensure its celebration of National Pancake Day continues."

In 2008, on a date to be determined IHOP plans to once again celebrate National Pancake Day and give away a free short stack of its signature buttermilk pancakes to each guest from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. In return, guests will be asked to consider making a donation to support local children's hospitals through Children's Miracle Network, a non-profit dedicated to improving children's hospitals nationwide, or other local charities.
